FRANÇOIS RICHARD, FLUTIST
Flutist, pianist and composer François Richard received an excellent musical education. At 10, he was already taking private lessons from the great classical flute master Jean-Pierre Rampal, as well as Gail Grimstead, Rampal’s student from the Conservatoire de Paris. In 1970, he studied flute with professor Jean-Paul Major, and piano at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal.

In 1976, he co-founded L’Orchestre Sympathique with vibraphonist Jean Vanasse. This group, which enjoyed critical acclaim, went on several international tours, was featured on radio (Radio-Canada) and television, produced a video (Spectel) at Théâtre Saint-Denis and three recordings, one of which was recorded during the Montreal International Jazz Festival and another, during Jazz from Detroit (Montreux-Detroit International Jazz Festival). While playing flute and piano with L’Orchestre Sympathique, François Richard had the privilege of sharing the stage with such well-known jazz musicians as Oscar Peterson, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins and McCoy Tyner. During the same period, he also collaborated on the music for several films, notably Juno award-winner Les Bons Débarras by Francis Mankievicz.

As an interpreter of world music, Richard can be heard on Playa Gitana CD with guitarist Juan Jose Caranza (Costa Rica). In December 2004, he was the soloist invited for the concert of Brazilian guitarist and composer Selsco Machado at Pierre-Mercure Hall, with whom he had recorded at Radio-Canada. In the 90s, he collaborated with French percussionist and composer, Jean-François Fabiano, of Martinique descent.

François Richard has played with many renowned musicians during his career, including Michel Donato, Yannick Rieu, percussionist Don Alias, François Bourassa, saxophonist Gary Bartz, and bassist Jaco Pastorius (of Weather Report). For the past few years, he has been sharing his passion for music by teaching jazz flute at Université du Québec à Montreal (UQAM), Université de Sherbrooke and CEGEP Vanier

After producing their first album Coïncidence in 1998, the François Richard Quartet released a second CD on the Effendi label entitled Ad Infinitum. In 2002, François Richard created his own concert production company, Créations Musicales François Richard – CMFR, and since then, he has produced several shows featuring well-known musicians.
The first major project realized by Créations Musicales François Richard - CMFR was the concert given by "François Richard Quartet" in December 2003 at GESÙ Hall, in collaboration with the "Montreal Jazz Year Concert". Afterwards, the musicians of former L'Orchestre Sympatique "L'OS" gathered for a concert in Studio-Théâtre Place des Arts, and the "Great Jazz Classics" at Lion d'Or with Michel Donato (double bass) and Jacques Labelle (guitar). The latest production was "Apologie II" with the "Double-Quartet", May 2005 at GESÙ Hall, with guests soloists Yannick Rieu, saxophonist, and Stéphane Allard, violinist and conductor of the string quartet. In Winter 2005, the Quartet gave a series of concerts called "Labyrinthe", in Maisons de la Culture, for "Le Conseil des Arts de Montréal en tournée" in collaboration with the Conseil des Arts de Montréal. Following the launching of CD "Ad Infinitum" and the performance at FIJM edition 2005, the Quartet appeared in a concert at GESÙ Hall on October 14, 2005.

One of his most recent major projects (2007) was Nouvel Orchestra, a concert given at the Gesù – Centre de créativitécombining music with original poetry by novelist Stanley Péan and works by Charles Baudelaire and Antonin Artaud. Nouvel Orchestra is scheduled for recording in the near future.
